地名由来：因位置靠近江边，故名。

2021年1月，江苏省生态环境厅命名经济开发区（滨江街道）为第三批江苏省生态文明建设示范镇村。

江苏海门经济开发区创建于1992年，是江苏首批省级开发区之一。
